no longer silent

Dolores Huerta (age 96) is finally able to talk about the ex-hero Cesar Chavez. This whole thing is sickening and now we scramble to change names (I'm guessing) on quite a few streets and buildings here in California where he led the Farmworkers Union back in the 70's. For shame, Cesar.

let us celebrate

March 8th is International Women's Day. I will wear this pin to the theater as I try to catch up with the time change today. Nice to sleep in this morning before fixing the clocks.

honoring women

Suze and I went to a lovely little ceremony on the steps of the SF Library yesterday and were treated to some powerful women reading some magnificent poetry, mostly by Maya Angelou, whose statue is shown here next to Suze. We wrote notes and put flowers on the statue and resolved to fight the good fight.

women warriors

One of our goals on Friday was to check out the Warrior gift shop at Chase Center and to purchase and support our new women's professional basketball team before they become a reality next year. Great color and design for the Golden State Valkyries ~ this a huge gift shop with mostly Golden State Warrior merchandise, but we persisted, as women do.

International Women's Day

This poster has been in my office since 1992. I knew the artist, Mary Siegfried, but can't find her now on Google. Speaking of women, I loved the Democratic-Women-in-White last night at the State of the Union address and was pleased that Potus did such a good job.

so much progress...

...so far to go. Yesterday we celebrated International Women's Day and one of my friends asked if men get the other 364 days. When I was growing up there were no women doctors, bus drivers, senators ~ only teachers, mothers, librarians and secretaries. So yes, we have come a long way. More!

lots of support

I so admire the brave/brave women and men of Iran who are protesting that right wing morality police business and the fight goes on. And on. Power. Keep up the good work, the world is watching.

Roe v. Wade overturned

A dark day for women (especially the poor) in America. There will always be abortions but now there will be danger and a huge loss of privacy in some states. I almost said "backward states". Gloom.

Alyssa makes the national news

For the first time in a Major League Baseball regular season game, a woman coached on the field. Alyssa Nakken has worked long and hard for our Giants and here she was Tuesday night, making history when she was assigned to first base. She received a nice ovation and here a rival Padre contratulates her. Yes!

She Day

March 8th ~ we all celebrate and salute the many changes and progress for women. Yes, there is still a long way to go, but it is doable. I will wear my special Women's Day pin today.

this morning's happiness

 From the Daily Pnut:

California began to effectively outlaw all-white-male boardrooms nearly three years ago, with the first quota law going into effect in 2018. Requirements that publicly-traded companies diversify their boardrooms have been criticized, mostly by conservative voices, and courts are still threatening to find ways to do away with the rules. But across the country, other companies have begun to take the advice to heart, hiring more women and people of color in leadership positions than ever before.

The number of women in control of a corporate board seat is over 50% more than it was in 2018, when the first laws were signed in California. Women now control over a quarter of corporate board seats nationwide. Companies are also hoping to see these same diversity efforts across races and ethnicities, recruiting people of color rapidly. While courts are pushing to remind states that these rules could fall apart legally, other state and federal regulators are joining in to push for more diversity at the top. Betsy Berkhemer-Credaire, chief executive of the Los Angeles-based advocacy group 50/50 Women on Boards, said, “The ripple effect has gone across the nation,” and she thinks that in the next decade “it will be quite an anachronism to remember when corporations had all-white-male boards.”

The Nasdaq exchange, which is mostly tech-focused, is requiring that almost all of its 3,000 companies have one woman, one woman of color, or one LGBTQ+ person on their board, or they will have to explain to their shareholders why they haven’t yet diversified. Republican senators fought against this rule, but federal regulators allowed it anyway. 12 senators wrote a letter saying the rule would sacrifice the economy for the sake of a social agenda, but the companies themselves seem fine with the rule, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and much of Congress do as well. Boardrooms shape the future of a company, and the companies we’re talking about here shape the future of our country, so any attempt to make them more representative of the population is a good thing. welcome to SF, Judy!

We are so looking forward to our Hero Judy Chicago whose exhibition opens Saturday at the deYoung. Last night I watched an interview with her and the curator who is responsible for this miracle. An amazing artist and such an inspirational woman. Yes, I have deYoung tickets already. Can't wait...

we mourn the Notorious RBG

So much sorrow as we learn that Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died last night. A small woman, a brilliant giant who fought for women's rights. A horrible loss in this bad year 2020.

Sunday Best

First, sleeping in until 6am is heaven for my inner time clock. I love Daylight
Savings and always have. Let's keep it. Oh, that's right, we voted to do so
and yet, and yet...

International Women's Day ~ I will wear my special pin today as I celebrate
women everywhere. But I especially salute my many women friends who
keep me sane and help me more than they will ever know. Deep gratitude.

we still march

my march-mates

determined

Thanks to the Blogmaid and family for hitting Market Street with me
yesterday for the Women's March. It's inspiring to see young and old
gather to give each other hope and some smiles for the clever signs
and costumes. You have my back in the bottom photo ~ note pussy
hat and gloves. It was cold for SF...but so much warmth.

ain't it the truth?

This from the South African exhibit in the Chicago Art Institute. We
need to take a quiet moment and appreciate how far women have
come in just a few short decades. Here, there ~ everywhere (almost)
and there is no stopping us now. They try, those smug patriarchs,
but they will be crushed.

women in white

This woman, Speaker Pelosi, makes me especially proud this morning
as she sarcastically gives a clap-back to the Orange Monster during
the State of the Union address which I missed on purpose. I loved
that so many of the women wore white to honor the suffragettes who
fought for our right to vote.

women in red

It was a beautiful day for a rally ~ too bad the microphone wasn't working
very well. Of course I'm glad I went to support my sisters and to feel
hope and strength again.
