one lovely movie

 Sentimental Value
was on my Oscar must-see list and yesterday I rented it on Prime for a very rewarding afternoon with popcorn and complete absorption. I do recommend this film featuring Stellan Skarsgard and Renate Rinse ~ it's in Norwegian, Swedish and English, but with subtitles it is easy to follow. I loved the story line and and sister dynamics. Sweet.

fame and sorrow

I watched Jay Kelly on the Flix® last night. Certainly not the best movie ever made, but I am glad that I saw it and it surely beats all those xmas specials for sure.

bargain matinee

Back to the Alamo yesterday with Amy doing all the heavy lifting again. Eephus is a sweet little baseball movie about a small town ritual that will be ending for this group of mostly out-of-shape, mostly middle age men. Quiet humor and nostalgia. Sweet, but not for everyone unless you love baseball. Oh, EEphus is the name of a very slow pitch, or so it seems.

almost an opera

I couldn't wait for the sun to go down at 5:03 pm or so last night so I could watch Emilia Perez, the fascinating film that I had never heard about until the Golden Globes. It's all in Spanish (pretty much) but good large subtitles and a glorious cast including Selena Gomez, Zoe SaldaƱa and the wonderful Karla Sofia Gascon (wearing orange, above). One critic said that Selena had unlocked her jaw for this movie. Not nice, but funny. I just loved this glorious Netflix film. Thumbs up.

weird movie, cool theater

It's unusually hot here in SF this week. Global warming, yup. The top photo here is the talented Emma Stone, then we have Margaret Qualley, Jesse Plemons and William Dafoe ~ all in a very strange movie Kinds of Kindness which Amy and I saw yesterday during Bargain Tuesday at the Alamo Drafthouse. Am I glad I saw this? Yes. Do I recommend it? Not really.

Minestrone, then Maestro

Bradley Cooper becomes Lenny Bernstein in this powerful movie. Last night Neti brought a big pot of veggie soup and we watched Maestro on Netflix. Everyone smoked ALL the time back then and of course that was exhausting to watch and we both felt like my little back room was filled with smoke when the credits came on. This is an excellent film ~ see it!

BFD Tuesdays

The Alamo Drafthouse offers movies for $9 on Tuesdays and yesterday Amy and I saw one of the best movies EVER ~ American Fiction with the amazing Jeffrey Wright who plays a serious author who writes a black ghetto story in order to make money. Just see this, OK?

zoom zoom and old guy jokes

I'm finally watching Top Gun Two because the award shows will be coming up and I hope to see one or two of the movies. Tom Cruise looks good and I'm a huge Jon Hamm fan,  Jennifer Connelly is pretty cool too. But glad I didn't pay big theater prices for this, I'm not part of the designated audience, that much I know for sure.

worthy of all honors and awards

Thanks to Luis the computer guy who spent two l-o-n-g hours here yesterday, I was able to watch CODA on Apple TV+ on my old Samsung TV. Such a fabulous movie ~ do not attempt without a box of Kleenex® at your side. So satisfying. Luis also fixed my iPad and iPhone and will return next Saturday for the main event, this MsBookAir from 2015. Sigh.

Oscar worthy movie

Drive My Car is so unusual. This Japanese film is loosely based on a short story by Haruki Murakami and I recommend it just because it is so powerful. A widowed actor needs a driver when he directs Uncle Vanya ~ I know I missed many of the detailed and nuanced scenes and conversations, but I loved this film and can't get it out of my mind. I watched it on HBO Max with cat-on-lap.

Long Island, NY ~ 1972

Thanks to the Fevered Brain for recommending this sweet movie The Tender Bar on Amazon Prime. A boy and his Uncle Charlie who runs Dickens bar full of characters and also full of life's lessons and love.

Seattle ~ 2020 or so

Gutsy Sandra Bullock stars in The Unforgivable and you might want to keep a Kleenex® nearby while watching this film. Very well done. Netflix.

Montana 1925 ~ incredible

How did we live happy lives before Netflix? You do not want to miss The Power of the Dog starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons. A beautiful piece of writing and acting.

free on Amazon Prime

East Side Sushi was recommended yesterday by Doug and Barb. A lovely little movie about a young Mexican woman who wants to be a sushi chef. Filmed across the Bay in Oakland! We actually had lunch INSIDE yesterday for the first time in over a year. Thursdays are still special, but warmer now. I do however, miss my friends' garden.
