thank you and RIP
I was sorry to see that Mark Bittner died on March 1. He cared for and wrote about the wild parrots here in San Francisco and his book (2005) and documentary were best sellers. The beautiful (and noisy and messy) wild parrots have proliferated in the City and we love them because they are another colorful part of the craziness that we celebrate here. Thank you, Mark.

a parrot line
Our official city bird ~ this photo is from the next neighborhood over, Potrero Hill. These wild parrots are all over SF now and of course this makes me VERY happy.

they are official now
Our famous parrots have become the official San Francisco animal. "Wild and free" and sometimes loud and messy. Of course we all loved the book and movie about these colorful creatures who arrived back in the 1980's and somehow managed to proliferate. There are more than 200 parrots in SF now, mostly around Telegraph Hill, the Presidio and Cole Valley. Squawk.

two blocks away
The loud and beautiful Wild Parrots of San Francisco were seen by a neighbor over the weekend. They are busy chomping juniper berries and reminding us all of the wonderful book and movie ~ 2003.

yes, they are still here
Sometimes I hear the parrots squawking when I'm out walking, but they blend in so nicely in the trees that I don't know how many or if they are happy and healthy. Thanks to the Blogmaid, who sent me this photo from her friends Elizabeth and Colette who live on Telegraph Hill, we can appreciate these wild birds again. The documentary was released in 2003 and was an instant hit. SF also has foxes, skunks, coyotes, possums, raccoons and somehow they all do just fine. Amazing.
