back up north

the all important phone check

The Plaza Bistro

Marsha and the two dogs and I went up to Sonoma for a vet visit and
of course stopped for lunch at her favorite spot, The Plaza Bistro, right
there on the square. It was too cold to sit outside so the owner let
us bring Rosa and Duca in and isn't that what friends are for? A fine
day for a good drive and chit chat to burn.

one night in Sonoma

Marsha at Girl and Fig

Concert Hall at Sonoma State

I'm home again now after the spectacular Diana Krall concert at Sonoma State
last night. Marsha and I had an early dinner at the Girl and Fig on the square
and then the not easy drive to/fro the Sonoma Creek Inn and the beautiful
Green Center venue. Diana was much more of a musician and less of a star
than I expected and I was so very impressed. Beautiful.

our day away

Marsha (above) picked me up at 8am and off we went with her two dogs
to her vet's in Sonoma where there was REAL sunshine and some pleasant
walking and talking. My little weepers from time to time didn't bother her
and we had a delicious lunch at the Bistro on the Square. I didn't get home
until 5:30 and already I miss my girl cat when I'm gone from her for too long.

my very favorite

Renee Fleming sang Handel, Brahms, Straus, Dvorak and other famous
composers. To me the most moving was from a modern composer (also a
violinist) named Caroline Shaw (B. 1982) who works with Kanye West.
The text is by Mary Jo Salter (B. 1954) and it brought me to tears.

Bed of Letters

Propped like a capital
letter at the head
of what was once our bed,

or like a letterhead -
as if your old address
were printed on my face -

I'm writing you this note
folded in sheets you lay
on them, but sleeplessly

night after night, a man
whose life became about
the fear of being found out.

Rarely a cross word
between us, although today
I see the printer's tray

of your brain, the dormant type
sorted in little rooms
to furnish anagrams,

fresh headlines, infinite
new stories in nice fonts.
Give her what she wants,

you must have thought, and brought
home seedlings to transplant
in flower beds, unmeant

to bloom into such tall
tales ~ which even you
can't unsay or undo.

And yet it's true that long
ago, two lovers dozed
naked and enclosed

one history between covers,
We woke and, shy and proud,
read our new poems aloud.

part two ~ Sonoma vaca

The Green Music Center

The Girl and the Fig

The concert was at the Green Music Center at Sonoma State University.
Neither of us realized that it looked closer on the map, but to get there
from Glen Ellen was not easy. Long and winding mountain roads ~ ick.
We were in our seats only two minutes before Renee came on stage.
Then we relaxed and enjoyed her glorious voice. She spoke before some
of the pieces and it was a truly wonderful experience. Slow and easy
got us back to our motel. Brunch at the famous Girl and Fig in Sonoma
Square on Sunday and then home for the Super Bowl. Happy for Philly!

one night in two parts

Sonoma Square for lunch

Walking in Glen Ellen ~ odd art

Dinner ~ Marsha waves enthusiastically

Marsha and I wanted to see Renee Fleming in concert so we drove up to
Sonoma on Saturday and had lunch in the square. Then to Glen Ellen
where we walked after we checked into our motel. So nice to get
away. We had dinner in Glen Ellen at Aventine ~ a wonderful restaurant
owned by Marsha's friend Adolpho, son of Angela Alioto.  More tomorrow...
