the yearly check-up
Heidi (left) helped me cage-and-carry Annabelle to the SPCA Vet Hospital yesterday for the yearly lecture on how I should be brushing the teeth of my feline who is now considered a senior. What? Hoe dd that happen? Annabelle is healthy and just a tad overweight and yes, about the best cat ever.

one group purrrrr bench
Of course you can't read the not so clever sign, nor can you see Ms. Snugglebutt in her carry cage, circa 1977. Everything is a big deal now days with the masks, but we were both happy to get the Wellness Exam out of the way and yes, Annabelle has a couple of love handles. (As does her owner.)

circles, bubbles, hope
| social distance chalk circles at Precita Park |
I try to stay in my own little bubble here, but of course there is the real world
and always/always during protest marches here we get outside agitators. The
crimes and looting. Well, not during the Women's Marches ~ that says
something, doesn't it? Civil unrest will lead to a better tomorrow, or so we
all hope. But going through this process is quite horrible, unless one turns
off the TV and avoids the newspapers.
Here from an email I received yesterday from a volunteer friend at the
SPCA ~ to cheer us all:
I hear there are hardly any dogs in the shelter now, and Kelly says that she
sees the ACAs taking out the dogs very often so that’s good. Adoptions are
still high and the foster dept is very busy now. Dirk said that when they
closed the shelter to volunteers, they put out a request for fosters and they
got thousands of responses!!! Amazing! That’s good for the dogs! Also heard
that Muttville’s adoptions were up 300%!!! I guess that’s the one good thing
that’s happening—that and the Space X launch!

hot dog with everything
Some Mondays I open with this wonderful staff person who often takes
dogs home to her small apartment with her new and understanding husband.
Dogs get so bored here, even in nice rooms and a day or night out keeps
them from going stir crazy. She found this hot dog costume (donated, I
would guess) for this little dachshund who must have some kennel cough
or fever or something and that is why she is wearing the blue gown and
gloves. I am still impressed with the SPCA and the loving and dedicated
workers. Everyone "gossips" about aniamls, not people here. Nice.

SPCA on Monday
![]() |
| The bridge is nice but she needs a forever home |
| The room where it happened |
Not too many dogs or cats today. I liked the black & white beauty
and my Annabelle was in this blue/grey Victorian when first our
eyes locked more than a year ago. I still enjoy my Monday morning
volunteer gig which is rather surprising.

wild life
Here is my piece for Tiapos Writing Group last night ~
FAT FRANK VS. THE TINY GIRL
Back in January of this year I wrote about the mouse in the kitchen at the
SPCA where I prepare food for the dogs every Monday morning. I made a
concerted effort to change my thinking and to become more accepting of
all of gods’ creatures. It was embarrassing to jump and squeal and prove
that I was a product of conditioning and of my narrow middle class upbringing
in Pasadena,California. Home of the Rose Parade.
But I would complain to the staff and they would smile and say that only
last week one of the volunteers took two of the mice home. They pointed
out the “humane” traps and I pointed out the mouse droppings. Then Frank
would come out and stare at me when we were alone together.
“If we don’t kill it, we name it.”
“Why can’t we do both?”
“We are a no-kill facility.”
“His name is Frank and he now has a family.”
So every Monday morning I turn on the lights in the kitchen and prepare
to face Frank and his kin. I try not to look at the floor, I avoid listening for
skittering sounds. One morning I actually heard little squeaks, and not from
me. My screams are loud and contain basic curse words.
Last Monday Anna the Opener bounced into the kitchen as I was starting to
open dog food cans. The door was already ajar and the lights were turned on
when I arrived.
“Did Tiny do her job?”
“Who is Tiny?”
“Tiny Cat. She spent the night in here.”
I looked around. NO mouse droppings. No more do-nothing humane traps and
best of all, no Frank for the entire morning. Later I saw the cat box and the
sign warning people that Tiny Cat was locked in the kitchen all night and beware
when opening the door.
We can depend on nature and god knows the SPCA has lots of feline inventory
in case Tiny Cat goes to her forever home. Her resume is looking great.

town hall meeting
Last night was a meeting with pizza for the hundreds of SPCA volunteers.
I had never attended one before, but I now force myself out at night when
possible and I'm glad I attended this just to learn a few things. That is
the brilliant and funny President, Dr. Jennifer Scarlett, in the top photo.
The SPCA is a huge success and many other shelters across the country
follow our no-kill policy. We have more people wanting animals than are
available in SF (!) so now they reach out and import the many, many
abandoned dogs and cats in rural and under-funded communities such as
Stockton, Fresno, Tulare, etc. Dr. Scarlett stressed the importance of
medical care at reasonable prices because that is why families often
abandon their pets. Oh, and YES ON 12.

cinnamon
This little darling was dashing about her SPCA room yesterday and I could
not get a smooth photo, but how about these markings? Could s human
get used to looking at her? Does Cinnamon kitty even know she is unusual?

TEAM BILL meets again
This morning at 10am the wonderful friends who helped Husbando
"transition" three weeks ago will meet at the SPCA to help me select
a cat. Not a kitten. He told me to get a cat when he died and we all
remember that he did not care for felines. I am excited. So once again,
here's to:

under ass doggie
Yes, five plus years later and I'm still falling in love with assorted
canines and felines at the SPCA. Here we have Sweetsie and he is a
bit of a scaredy cat but adorable as can be. Just out of puppyhood
and ready for his forever home.

meet Queenie
She's a Miniature Doberman and as sweet as can be. Well-cared for,
perhaps a little overweight, and hoping for a new forever home. The
SPCA had her labeled as a Manchester Terrier but our friend Marsha
said, "no", because of her ears, eyes, tail and other details.

back to my office
Yesterday I returned to feed about 50 dogs and to make sure that I could
still open cans and scoop out kibble at the SPCA. I had to put my ugly
velcro brace on after a few minutes of work, but that did the trick and
we were all just fine. Good to be back!

the holiday meow
Yesterday I generously gave my two hours to the SPCA, standing outside
the windows at Macy's. One puppy and mostly orange cats on display.
Orange cats are THE BEST. The humans weren't quite as generous as
in years past, but I understand that ~ the world is a scary place now. Then
I went for a bowl of roasted duck soup at the Thai Noodle place. Things
fell back into place after that.

all a-jumble
Nap time for twelve puppies at the SPCA. One mother doing double duty
for her six and then the other six pups whose mom could not be found.
Soon the pups will be eating and mom can rest and go to the spa. She
deserves it. It is amazing to watch them sleep like this. Each one already
has a name because the vets need to check them out and administer meds
if needed.

shop at Macy's
I had lunch with Frances yesterday and she was in a happy state of mind
because of the new addition to their home. Meet Tayto, named after an
Irish potato chip. The windows at Macy's are full of dogs and cats and
soon I will go down to see for myself and pester passerby people for donations.
Tayto is a brand new kitten, weighing only two pounds. Sweet.

the new canine (K-9)
This is the new security guard at the SPCA. I believe it is a giant
camera, but I'm not sure. Yesterday a man walking by thought that I
was controlling K-9 with my iPhone. It's huge and heavy, but I
still think it might end up in the back of a pick-up truck. It probably
goes inside at night, freaking out the dogs and cats as he rolls by.

when love walked in
I met this dog last week. He is HUGE and has some pit in the mixture
and I was a little taken aback. Then he came over to me and leaned
against my thigh, looked up and smiled. I worried about him all week
because he is such a big guy and he is also deaf. Well, he was adopted
during the week by a hefty man with two teen (I think) sons and they are
NOT going to change his name. Have a happy forever life sweet
and gentle Marshmallow.

welcome, y'all...
On Sunday the San Francisco SPCA went to the airport to welcome some
cute new rednecks from Hurricane Harvey. They cleaned out a shelter in
Houston so the lost animals and owners could find each other there. We
have 10 new adult dogs and 12 new puppies and a ton of cats and kittens.
I didn't meet any yesterday because they are all in hospital now ~ they
never put any animal up for adoption without a thorough check-up and
procedures, if needed. I'm always proud to work at our SPCA, but even
more so yesterday.

dog daze
Animals don't know or care about human holidays, so nothing changes
at the SPCA. It is a little less hectic because the rooms don't have to be
spotless before 1pm when the first customers usually arrive. The top
photo is often part of my job and the five dogs who wouldn't pose
for my iPhone camera are going to socialize together and learn to
get along with others in their small dog play group.
