 I was intrigued by this woman at SF Moma on Monday. Even her hair was green, as was her hair ornament. If I was a REAL photographer I bet this would be an outstanding image, but alas...

in search of Todd Hido

 What a nice day I had with Terri yesterday. She drove (thank you!) to the Minnesota Street Project where we discovered the top two pieces, then we walked over to Casemore Gallery to soak in the Todd Hido (a local photographer who studied with Larry Sultan). His House Hunting exhibit is well worth seeing and I'm glad he included the cat. Yummy lunch at the Hard Knox and then I finally got to Scrap...I will cover that tomorrow and you will love it too. Promise.

Irving Penn at the DY

 Amy and I had such a fine time at the Irving Penn exhibit and I urge you to see this photographer's exquisite work. From the top: the Mermaid Dress, Colette and Picasso. He had such a way with light and angles and, especially, people. The deYoung does an excellent job curating Mr. Penn's work and there was a lot of history to absorb too. Terrific!

Ansel Adams comes home

 I have some nerve taking crooked photos of The Master's work. There is a BIG exhibit just opening at the deYoung and yesterday Heidi and I went with many others to appreciate Ansel Adams and other photographers. He was born and raised in San Francisco, out at Sea Cliff, which was mostly sand dunes back then. These nature photographers helped create and save the National Parks across America and their love of the great outdoors benefitted us all.

 I fell in love with the Aura Digital Frame when I was at Ginger Two's home in Santa Barbara. During the great rains last week I decided to treat myself to one from (of course) Amazon and this very morning, in less than an hour, I set it up. I can hear your applause. Maybe this will encourage me to spend more time chopping and cooking, but so far all I do is stand, stare and smile. 

Pier 24 Photography

 Lovely yesterday with good walking (top) and then this fabulous Pier 24 photography exhibit. The photographer Tod Hido is responsible for the gorgeous works in the bottom two pics here. I met Terri and then we had coffee afterwards at the busy Ferry Plaza and we enjoyed the sunshine and chit chat. Our weather, by the way, is spectacular currently.

 Comedy Pet Photography Awards ~ maybe my favorite kind of humor these days. My girl, just in case you are wondering, makes me laugh at least once a day with her antics. I don't miss Facebook at all, but I do love the cat and dog videos on Instagram, so that remains on a once-every-three-days kinda habit. 

Pier 24 ~ Looking Back

 Hmmmm, thanks to Linda (of LindaKindle fame) for alerting me that my post did not go through this morning. Well, yesterday I went to Pier 24 to see many, many of our old favorites from the past decade. I was pleased to see the one I am featuring here, The Brown Sisters by Nicholas Nixon, 1975 - 2019. It is fitting that my photos are so bad when so many of the greats are here at Pier 24: Avedon, Arbus, Weston, Friedlander, Winograd, etc. The top photo shows the four women as old ~ nothing says Time Marches On like people photos, don't you agree? This gallery was Bill's favorite but I didn't well up once, it was the first time I'd been back since he died. I had a really good day...

impossibly good

Tempted though I was to stay home and binge on Netflix or Amazon
Prime, I walked up to 24th Street and enjoyed my first Impossible
no-meat burger. It was yummy. Then I hopped on the #48 and went
to the McEvoy Center to catch the Michael Jang photography exhibit.
The photo I feature here is from the George Moscone funeral and
yes, I was there. Jang's family photos are terrific too because he has
a great eye for the absurd ~ and families can be that.

Pat, photography and Perry's

I met my friend Pat Snyder at Pier 24 late yesterday afternoon and we
appreciated the great photography exhibit there. The above is a Chinese
factory and it overwhelmed all of my senses. Lots of famous photographers
and images ~ Husbando loved this space so much and it was the first time
I had returned since he died. Then we hopped over to Perry's for half
priced burgers and home before the sun set. Today I have a Free Day
with lots of tasks and maybe a nap. Beautiful weather ~ no fog!

The Grain of the Present, Pier 24 Photography’s ninth exhibition, examines the work of ten photographers at the core of the Pilara Foundation collection—Robert Adams, Diane Arbus, Lewis Baltz, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Lee Friedlander, Nicholas Nixon, Stephen Shore, Henry Wessel, and Garry Winogrand—whose works share a commitment to looking at everyday life as it is. Each of these figures defined a distinctive visual language that combines formal concerns with a documentary aesthetic, and all of them participated in one of two landmark exhibitions: New Documents (1967) at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, or New Topographics (1975) at the International Museum of Photography, George Eastman House, Rochester.

Yesterday I visited the FraenkelLab at Fell and Market where Sophie
Calle's thoughts and photos about death are beautifully curated. The
name of the exhibit: My mother, my cat, my father, in that order.
I had the gallery to myself and was enchanted, despite or because
of the subject matter.

much to see and think about

Sophie is a French photographer who receives an email from her lover.
He is breaking up with her and Sophie gives the letter to 107 women
who help her understand and heal. Photos, videos, comments on copies
of the letter, anger, humor and so much understanding. Ginger and I did
not know what to expect at this Sophie Calle exhibit down at Fort Mason,
but it was beyond wonderful and we will return before it closes on
August 20th. Women readers will LOVE this one. Go!

Jim Marshall photographed all of the rock bands back in the 60's. He took
pictures every day of his life. SF City Hall now has an exhibit of 80 photos
and they are well worth seeing. This was our 3rd (and final) Summer of
Love exhibition and is by far the best. There were maybe two or three
other oldies there, admiring Jim's photos and remembering names and
music from the past which makes it easy to see, but really more people
need to go and appreciate this immense talent.

There was a sell-out crowd yesterday for Alexander Nemerov's presentation
about his aunt Diane Arbus. Well, since it was a free event, I guess I should
reword that first line. Mr. Nemerov (son of poet Howard) teaches art and
Stanford students and professors were there in abundance, but I was there early
for a good seat. I wanted more about Diane, but he did show a few from her
1969 The School collection but he was only eight when she committed suicide
so he didn't really know his Aunt Diane. It was good but I wanted more...

Foggy Night, Land's End

Yesterday Husbando and I went to the Leica store (and gallery) on Bush
Street to see and appreciate the more than 50 photos of our city by Fred
Lyon who is celebrating his 90th birthday with a new book and this
glorious exhibit. Beautiful, amazing black and white photos from many
corners of this unusual city. Free. Through October 22nd. Go.

We met Ginger here yesterday and had a wonderful time viewing this new
exhibit. So much to see and appreciate. Pier 24 is FREE, but you need to
reserve online first because they keep tight control over the number of
visitors per day. As a result, each person has space and time to spend
with all the photographs ~ to study and enjoy them without bumping
into others. Then a nice lunch in the sun at Ferry Plaza. Living in SF ~
one of the things we did right in this life. Gratitude.

attention photography enthusiasts

We had seen some of this movie a while back, but last night we watched
the whole thing and it is both wonderful and sad. Finding Vivian Maier
is a documentary about a photographer (born 1926) whose vast amount
of work was discovered after she died. She made her living as a nanny
but there aren't too many cute child photos, thank goodness. (Netflix!)

city life?

From the Pier 24 photographer, I needed a few days to think about this
before I posted it. It inspires me for those times when I just want to
stay at home and watch "Person of Interest" on the Flix®. But, hey, I
can do both!

Pier 24 photography

This exhibit is entitled The Whiteness of the Whale and the photographer is
Paul Graham. It has to do with Moby Dick and time and white and other
things too esoteric for me. But we met Ginger there and wandered about,
then a Vietnamese pork sandwich out in the sun at Ferry Plaza. A fine
half day with a rush home to watch our next President conduct herself
with grace and strength in front of the GOP witch hunt.
