my New Year's Eve date(s)
Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen. We begin here at 5pm so I can get to sleep way before midnight. I smile as I remember past New Year's Eves with Husbando and that expensive, rare and luscious roast beef and potatoes and fake champagne and the pure pleasure of just being together. Good memories.

and more Netflix...
Delhi Crime is rough and violent, but fascinating to see how the police operate in this overcrowded and dangerous city. There are strong women characters and this boss (above) is called Madam Sir. I guess this is the closest I will get to India and I appreciate TV for this reason among many.

it is pretty, and yet...
This is Rob's back yard in Clarence, New York, right outside of Buffalo. Rob is my youngest step son and they usually don't get this much snow. The dog (Honey Stein) loves running and playing in this. It is just so peaceful, isn't it?

a holiday monolith appears
This is a gingerbread monolith that appeared for Christmas in Corona Heights Park. As a friend who moved to the East Coast a few years ago said, "Oh, San Francisco, this is why I can not stop loving you." It crumbled, alas, after a few days in the mist and fog. You just don't find this in Wichita, Kansas.

I am officially a Cat Lady
Really, I am honored to have the title and Annabelle is proud too. Most gifts these days are cat-themed and that is okay by us.

a laugh out loud movie!
Who knew? A friend who worked with me at the museums texted me to watch Love Wedding Repeat on Netflix and since I am so not-busy I did. Funny and clever and exactly what a recluse needs these days. Either watch it today or put it on your To Do List, you will thank me.

Chrstmas Eve Pod Meeting
Chef Sarah joined us at Doug and Barb's yesterday and she gifted me with enough food to last for a week. Drat, and I was looking forward to Campbell's Soups. We had a nice time talking, laughing and crying. Honestly, this is pretty much a shit time for everyone. Good to know we aren't alone. It is cold and grey here now, but that's okay. Netflix, here I come (again). Love to all, stay safe. Oh, Merry Christmas.

today's writing prompt
MY FAVORITE CHRISTMAS TOY (the prompt). Santa tried to interest me in dolls of all ages, but from the earliest moment I knew that phrase "the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world" was designed to keep women on a lower rung in society, too busy with boring things like diapers and house cleaning. I knew instinctively that raising children was really hard work and not very interesting, all in all. But hey, who wants to hear this on Christmas Eve Day? No one. When I was about ten I was given a bright red metal toy cash register and man, what fun was that? The dye was cast for this future retailer...

ooooh and it's so very French
Last night I started watching Call My Agent on Netflix and I think it will see me through this ho ho happy holiday season. It is a series and appears to be filmed mostly in Paris about an agency that works with actors and not one individual seems to be sane and that is a-ok with me. And then we go to a French restaurant and I melt with nostalgia and longing.

every card counts
Call me old fashioned and don't send me musical e-cards, please. The older I get the more I appreciate the joy of sending and receiving holiday cards. Friends from near and far and then this wonderful coincidence of two sandhill cranes ~ one from Bill in Florida (top) and one from Linda and Tom in Albuquerque. Now that is a very good sign for 2021, I'm sure you agree.

incredible waves
The Blogmaid took this fabulous photo yesterday when we social distanced down in Pathetica. It was a lovely December day and we enjoyed walking and chatting and drinking lattes from the world famous Chit Chat Cafe.

party time ~ 2020 style
The writing group had a good (long) zoom-fest yesterday afternoon and then my neighbor brought me some delicious chicken soup, yum. Linda in Albuquerque recommended "Stranger Than Fiction" (a movie on Amazon Prime) and so my Saturday zipped by. I loved the movie so much. I organized the incoming holiday cards and will present those to you tomorrow.

Friday with and without a fur ball
Sometimes when I exit the living room to do my chores I am guilty of leaving the fireplace on for a certain soft blob of love who is just too comfortable. Annabelle is so pretty with the gentle glow of firelight on her ultra sweet self. Yesterday Ginger and I returned to Crissy for a beautiful and brisk walk and we talked about the huge snow storm on the East Coast. With just a touch of glee...

downtown ghost town
It's usually a horribly busy time of year which I hated when I worked down at the Big Box. But this is awful too ~ no cable cars, no foot traffic, no hustle or bustle. Yesterday I had yet another dental issue and I did walk around a bit and felt such sorrow for the merchants and restaurants. The only busy place was a Covid-19 testing sight. Soon vaccination clinics, or so we hope. Stay safe, world.

golden days of yore
The Great Plotnik asked for old Tiapos photos because he is organizing a big Zoom holiday party. I sent him these along with a few tears because of course I miss Jane and Bill who were so much a part of our writing lives for so long. It's too easy to sink into sorrow, but NO, I will not. Onward. One more Zoom.

...it's about time
The old turtle Moscow Mitch finally congratulated Biden and Harris on the Senate floor yesterday. This was after Putin sent his congrats re the election win. This continues to be the strangest year ever, in so many ways. I am spending Wednesday, 1/20/21 in front of the TV, wearing red, white and blue. You?

oh, those Olympics
I've been watching (and absorbed in) this miniseries on Netflix. Remember the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta? Manhunt Deadly Games tells the story of part-time security guard Richard Jewell who discovered the bomb and was first a hero, then the suspect. Honestly, when I started this I couldn't remember if Richard Jewell was the bomber or not. He wasn't. Now I see that he died in 2007 from diabetes, but he did at least receive a $$$$ settlement for slander. A sad story, all in all.

lotta rain, lotta glitz
A glorious rainy SF day, all day, so I didn't have to worry about when to walk or which face mask to wear. I enjoyed two hours of hahahaha pure FUN with Prom on Netflix. Was it meaningful? No. World-changing? Who cares. Good timing, Netflix, during this dreary year. A popcorn-perfect treat.

well, it is better than nothing
I try, but I'm not a Zoom person. I guess the fact that I don't like the phone, Facetime or Skype would be a clue. I appreciate when I am invited, I do, but it is a chore for me. Yesterday I was happy to see everyone in Kristin's Apple group of women friends (aka The Cupcakes) and I was pleased to be invited, but I look forward to next year when we can meet in Pumpkinville once again in the living room of the Blogmaid.

right before the rain
Ginger and I only walked around Stowe Lake once before being pelted by some most welcome rain drops. People have been decorating this one tree pictured and of course the kids are enthralled. We did get our coffee and a sweet, so the important things were taken care of.

special guest blogger
My writing partner this week is Doug, The Great Plotnik himself. I use You Tube all the time now that I live alone and this piece really hit home for me. Who does these selfless videos and god love 'em ~ there isn't anything I can't find. Ever.
Our barbecue has been misbehaving for quite a while. The other night, I turned it on to grill some salmon, but flames shot up out of the side of the kettle. I rushed out and turned off the propane, but decided I wouldn’t use it again until I had talked with Weber.
Once upon a time, Weber had terrific customer service. You called and whatever part you complained about, they just sent you a new one free of charge. Now you can’t get through to them at all, even though the robot says they are dedicated to all the fine citizens in their grilling community, but you can end up in an email loop where they keep asking you for your serial number.
So I turned to Dr. YouTube. I have no idea why people would spend time making a video to teach us arcane things like fixing a shoelace or making soup from Brussels sprouts or repairing a bbq, but, sure enough, I found an earnest Asian man from New Zealand who said the only thing I have to do is take a straight pin and make sure every hole in the burners is clear of gunk.
Easy for him to say. There are hundreds of holes and it’s a greasy job. But I did it, while sitting on a bucket under the avocado tree with a pail of soapy water. It worked!

opening now!
The Lighted Forest opens tonight in Golden Gate Park. I'm a sucker for anything with lights. I'm a coward when crowds gather to spread Covid germs, so I will probably miss this event. I hope it returns next year when we are back to (somewhat) normal. I am not in a Count My Blessings kind of mood yet today...

such a powerful woman
Frances Perkins served as the Secretary of Labor for FDR from 1933 to 1945. The Woman Behind the New Deal is our Book Club selection for January and honestly, I thought it might be dull and I might be skimming a little. Wrong. Frances Perkins was a workers-rights advocate and the main architect of the New Deal. She just might have saved our country back then...

fan of bamboo?
Well, not in one's garden, perhaps, but our kitchen floor is bamboo and now, maybe my toilet paper will be too. I'm tempted to order some and here is the information:
Meet honeycomb
We created honeycomb to make it easy for anyone to start using eco-friendly products.
If every household were to change nothing else about their habits except swapping their toilet tissue, we would save 27,000 trees per day. That feels pretty big, so we worked hard to make the softest sustainable tissue possible - without trees.
We offer our toilet tissue subscription as a simple way to help you commit to one eco-friendly habit. You're welcome to pause or adjust your frequency at any time - but we think you'll feel pretty good about the good you're doing.

so much material for SNL
Well, back to excellence for SNL last night with one my favorites, Jason Bateman, hosting. There is so much to make fun of in the real world of life and politics and these guys do it best. Not every single time, but last night was just what we needed.

much needed! Sherlock has a sister!
I stumbled onto this last night trying to escape dreary news and it is great fun. If you loved Stranger Things you will be delighted to see the heroine of Enola Holmes. Netflix? Well, of course. Now, off we go for a few happy adventures while we stay at home...

from a farm in Minnesota
Well, this is a first. I bought my wreath from Amazon this year in an effort to avoid crowds. I am delighted with this ~ it is fresh and beautiful and smells like an evergreen forest.

I know addiction
I try to check Facebook only once a day, Instagram once every three days or so. All sorts of male creeps try to follow me on Instagram and I am so, so sick of it. Email is bad enough, but at least there is a bit of privacy, or so we hope. I too believe that FB has done a lot of good, but does it outweigh the bad? I will watch The Social Dilemma again before I make a decision. I had heard about this documentary for months and yes, I am about ready to pull the Facebook plug. Watch this on Netflix, it is astounding. Very glad I never hooked up with Twitter.

the walls of SF
I had a good afternoon walk yesterday (9529 steps), stopping for a latte and then snapping this piece of art before it disappears or gets painted over. It's on 25th Street near Valencia in the Mission, in case you want to see this John Lewis tribute in person.

my smart hour
An interesting concept from my writing partner this week. He is a musician and tries to practice during his smart hour. At night I do word games on my iPad before I go to sleep. Usually I can finish them, but sometimes they make no sense and I wait and do them in two seconds the next morning. Morning is also the only time I do my writing and emailing. After about 9am my brain spirals down. This has always been true for me, but more so as I age.
