thank you, Linda

Hmmmm, bad stock photo here, but I did follow Linda's wonderful suggestion to watch Station Eleven on HBO. This is based on the novel (same name) by Emily St. John Mandel who wrote The Glass Hotel ~ I am reading that currently. I tend to avoid post-apocalyptic dystopian fiction, but I was hooked at once when I watched the first episode.

these bad sisters = good TV

Bad Sisters is a dark murder mystery comedy on Apple TV.  Five women plot, plan, squabble, laugh, cry and cover-up their foul deed. But not very well, of course. We know Sharon Horgan from Catastrophe and I am one of her many fans.

golden doodles galore

Everyone loves this breed and now grand daughter, Samantha, and her partner, Luke, just brought Harlow into their lives. Sam grew up fearing dogs (long story) and then her parents brought home Honey Stein, a golden doodle, and life often changes in a good and positive way.

lunch with Evie

We worked together at Barnes and Noble down by fish wharf many years ago. Yesterday we sat outside at Toast on Church Street for catch-up time. Evie has a home here and a condo in Palm Springs, so she isn't here very often. She told me about Tribel, another social networking app, and I put it on my iPad, but didn't really sign-up. It seems to be very left wing which, as you have guessed, is fine with me.

photos from Dale

My writing partner, Dale, lives in Massachusetts now, but he used to live here and would walk the Golden Gate Bridge early in the morning. He is a wonderful photographer and these are from ten years ago. A lot of his writing is about SF. Dale and his wife moved East to be with family ~ he is a bit homesick.

put this on your reading list

Today I'm having lunch with Bill's cousin, Steve, and he had recommended The Glass Hotel a few months ago, so I thought I'd better check it out. This is a fabulous novel! I had not heard of Emily St. John Mandel, but this woman can write. It's one of those, "well, I have a lot of tasks to do, but I'll just sit for a minute and read a few pages," kind of books. Make that a few chapters...

heavy fog, yet comforting too

Ginger and I had our walk down at Pacifica yesterday and then sat on a concrete bench to listen to the waves and enjoy our coffee. Lots of dogs and what we guess are the daily walkers ~ usually friendly and smiling. The city was sunny but I don't know if the coastline ever shed this grey overcoat.

pretty Polk Street

I had a lovely latte here at Cafe Reveille yesterday before going to my acupuncture appointment. So nice to have the time to explore different SF neighborhoods as I read the New Yorker and improve on my people watching skills. Weather? Ideal.

four on 15th Street

Heidi and Laurence joined Emma and me yesterday to pick up trash. We laughed and chatted and felt like such good citizens. There were a lot of volunteers yesterday at Manny's ~ this positive movement seems to be growing in SF and this makes me very happy.

extraordinary drama from the Flix®

Extraordinary Attorney Woo (above) is a delightful Korean series featuring an autistic lawyer who captures our hearts as she solves problems and gets involved in office politics. I love this so much.

don't knock Nick's

Old fashioned good ~ upholstered booths and lavish drinks. Nick's at Rockaway Beach (Pacifica) has been here forever and yesterday we celebrated Barb's birthday there for crab sandwiches. I splurged on scallops since I was treating. Soooo good. We had a lot of catch-up to do and it was a lovely time right on the ocean in the (of course) fog. And that's all as it should be.

it's not all about the score

Ginger, her sister Amy and I had a fine time at the Jewel yesterday. The Giants had a bad time. You can see that the weather was perfect, even a bit warm for San Francisco. We had a healthy lunch of garlic fries, hot dogs and Cracker Jack's for dessert.

art, food and friendship

Yesterday I went to the Museum of Craft and Design and Ken took me to lunch at the brand new Greek restaurant Soula right near his museum. There are two artists exhibiting currently ~ Robyn Horn (pictured) and Iris Eichenberg. I fell in love with Ms. Horn's work: Small Red Door, Really Leaning and Continuous Motion (top to bottom). Then Ken and I had good catch-up chatter over salads. A fine Wednesday.

a happy accident

I was googling around in an attempt to find a really GREAT potato salad for the next writing group gathering up at Chef Sarah's ~ and behold, I discovered Ted's Market and Deli on Howard Street. Not the greatest neighborhood, perhaps, but this bustling spot has been open since 1967, and has a bunch of loyal customers. The nicest people behind the counter and reasonable prices. No place to sit so I brought home this huge sandwich and excellent potato salad. Hooray! (Oh, easy parking too.)

think about it...

Today I'm borrowing from David Pell's NextDraft newsletter. This makes so much sense to me:

When Rushdie was attacked, I was reminded of the words of his friend Chris Hitchens when the threat on Rushdie's life was issued—words that have a much broader meaning at this moment in America's history: I felt at once that here was something that completely committed me. It was, if I can phrase it like this, a matter of everything I hated versus everything I loved. In the hate column: dictatorship, religion, stupidity, demagogy, censorship, bullying, and intimidation. In the love column: literature, irony, humor, the individual, and the defense of free expression. Rushdie survived the attack. Hopefully, America will.

training Heidi

Here is my neighbor in front of Manny's yesterday morning. I'm glad she went with me because my regular partner, Emma, was in Kentucky visiting family. Heidi was very detailed, at first, but I taught her what to avoid and actually we did contribute two bags each to this impressive pile.

Beatrice, Kansas

Mind Over Murder is an HBO documentary about a woman (age 68) who was raped and murdered back in 1985. Six people did time and are now out and good god, spare me these small midwestern towns. So bleak and depressing. They even pronounce the name of the town incorrectly ~ Be AH trice. Damn.

Our Ground Time Here Will Be Brief

That's the title of my old yellow-with-age poetry book by Maxine Kumin. I just googled to make sure that she is still alive. Born in 1925. Yes! I am sure I have posted this poem before but that's a-ok. A fave.

How It Is

Shall I say how it is in your clothes?
A month after your death I wear your blue jacket.
The dog at the center of my life recognizes
you’ve come to visit, he’s ecstatic.
In the left pocket, a hole.
In the right, a parking ticket
delivered up last August on Bay State Road.
In my heart, a scatter like milkweed,
a flinging from the pods of the soul.
My skin presses your old outline.
It is hot and dry inside.

I think of the last day of your life,
old friend, how I would unwind it, paste
it together in a different collage,
back from the death car idling in the garage,
back up the stairs, your praying hands unlaced,
reassembling the bits of bread and tuna fish
into a ceremony of sandwich,
running the home movie backward to a space
we could be easy in, a kitchen place
with vodka and ice, our words like living meat.

Dear friend, you have excited crowds
with your example. They swell
like wine bags, straining at your seams.
I will be years gathering up our words,
fishing out letters, snapshots, stains,
leaning my ribs against this durable cloth
to put on the dumb blue blazer of your death.

Pier 24 Photography

Lovely yesterday with good walking (top) and then this fabulous Pier 24 photography exhibit. The photographer Tod Hido is responsible for the gorgeous works in the bottom two pics here. I met Terri and then we had coffee afterwards at the busy Ferry Plaza and we enjoyed the sunshine and chit chat. Our weather, by the way, is spectacular currently.

we're talking Tunnel Tops

I had lunch here at the new Presidio Tunnel Tops recreation area and it was even better than advertised. Lots and lots of space to walk and tons of comfy benches and tables ~ spectacular views. Only food trucks so far, but I'm sure cafes will open soon. Tons of people, but there is so much room that it never felt crowded. I avoided the lower level which features playgrounds and a gazillion happy children. The Golden Gate bridge was just shedding its fog robe and the cameras were clicking constantly. I wanted to do a solo test run before venturing here with others, Success!

Balmy Alley

Yesterday Ginger and I walked close to home and then came back here for cat and coffee. Balmy Alley is a block long street here in the Mission featuring ever changing murals and stunning artwork. Lots of tourists and cameras here again, I'm happy to report.

just gathering papers

tRump called it a "raid" but the FBI was simply picking up documents at Mar-a-Lago yesterday. Papers that belong to the American People. It's the LAW. So very tired of this man who will never go away.

music, dancing, nostalgia!

A huge and talented cast yesterday for Follies,  a musical by the late Stephen Sondheim. I had never heard of this one and I commend the SF Playhouse for putting on such an impressive production. Neti and I both enjoyed ourselves immensely ~ a fun afternoon for sure.

the 2022 revolution

 I really like not working. I am fascinated by this new way of thinking wherein SLACKER in no longer a dirty word. My writing partner and I have both been exploring all of it this week and I just sent her this little snippet;

Gallup’s global workplace report for 2022 showed that only 9% of workers in the UK were engaged or enthusiastic about their work, ranking 33rd out of 38 European countries. The NHS staff survey, conducted in the autumn of 2021, showed that morale had fallen from 6.1 out of 10 to 5.8, and staff engagement had dropped from 7.0 to 6.8.

“Since the pandemic, people’s relationship with work has been studied in many ways, and the literature typically, across the professions, would argue that, yes, people’s way of relating to their work has changed,” Kordowicz said.

TikTok posts about quiet quitting may have been inspired by Chinese social media: #TangPing, or lying flat, is a now-censored hashtag apparently prompted by China’s shrinking workforce and long-hours culture.

talking Tajin

My readers who spend a lot of time in Mexico will probably already know about this spice. Lynn and Cristina next door introduced me to Tajin this week and I found it easily at my Safeway. It's chile and lime and sea salt ~ wonderful on fruit, especially watermelon. All natural and bueno!

writing challenge

Six-Word Stories. Dramas in one breath. Links to six-word story guidelines.
WILLIAM FAULKNER famously said that a novelist is a failed short story writer, and a short story writer is a failed poet. Hemingway, with his creation of the six-word story, combined poetry and drama into a short form that has grown in popularity while remaining difficult to achieve. Narrative is looking for six-word stories that can stand alongside the best that have been written. Here are some that we’ve featured in the magazine:

            1968
Met at demonstration. Married. Still protesting.   —Jane Seskin

            After War
I’m home alive. Well, not really.   —HC Palmer

            Grief
Without thinking, I made two cups.   —Alistair Daniel

            Hit and Run
Reported hit and run. Then ran.   —AnnaLee Pauls

waiting for sunrise

I was eager to check out my minimal gardening skills from yesterday and also pleased to see blue sky this morning. I'm still a morning person and love this time of day but after being part of a couple for so long I do miss the mindless marital chatter. Annabelle tries...then naps.
