Sunday funnies

My girl is ONLY in the top photo. Honest. So far I do not have matching slippers. So far I do not want matching slippers. I believe that some already consider me a crazy cat lady.

Diego was busy and talented

And yes, irritating to feminists, but that's another story. Yesterday I went to SF Moma to check our Diego Rivera's exhibit and who did I run into? My friend Pat (top photo) was there with her grandson who rode the ferry over from Marin. This was my first Diego visit and I will return as I did not do him justice.

The Park Chalet

No, I didn't take the top photo, but it shows what a great location for this restaurant. It was too damn cold to eat outside, but we felt safe indoors as we celebrated Neti's birthday. Note that Pat is wearing a turtleneck and yes, it was that kind of no-sun-by-the-ocean day. At Park Chalet we could sit and linger over coffee as it was not that busy and the service and food = excellent.

exposing the "fundies"

Mormon fundamentalists are just as bad as those in every religion, using church doctrine to benefit themselves. I never read Under the Banner of Heaven, but this Hulu tv series is well done. Andrew Garfield is the Mormon detective and has about the most expressive face imaginable. Based on a true and gruesome crime in Utah back in the 80's.

do you call this Summer?

Eventually the fog burned off yesterday, but it was pretty chilly out at Stow Lake for the Tuesday Adventure and Coffee with Ginger. Still beautiful, of course. I do love my fireplace on these cold, grey mornings, even if SF is out-of-step with the rest of America.

still selling books

I only give books illustrated by Linda Davick to the children who appear in my life. Linda writes many of the books too and they are available on Amazon. Glorious! Here we have my neighbor Emilio and my great granddaughter Lila devouring Linda's wonderful I Love you, Nose!

back to Saturday

Here are a couple of group photos, thanks to Barb and Doug. It was a delightful day!

music, food, laughter and words

We await the group photos from yesterday, but here are three from our writers' gathering over at Suzy's in Oakland. So much joy ~ just what we all needed. Harmony (her real name) is the rap star in the middle picture, she lives with Suzy and Floyd. Amazingly, we have been gathering for more than twenty years and yesterday we celebrated that and so much more. A wonderful day.

finally into this true story

Barb recommended Survive the Savage Sea a couple of years ago and I bought it through ABE, the used book online store. It's been sitting here. The author, Dougal Robertson, and his family are set adrift in an inflatable raft after a ship wreck. The year? 1972. The location? Pacific Ocean as they look for a rescue heading toward  Costa Rica. A terrifying journey and well written.

why rush?

I've been considering visiting Garfield Pool and Community Center for the past 40 years or so and as I was walking by yesterday I said, "Just go in, woman!" This is only three or four blocks away and some of my neighbors are swimmers but it isn't my kind of exercise. I took the photo between kids' swim sessions and then scurried out. So this is checked off my To Do List.

Mario's and memories

I had a long and wonderful morning in North Beach before I met Karen H. for lunch at Mario's. They have changed the bus routes and I need to learn a few new details, but I'm all for exploration and exercise so everything worked out, it just took a bit more time. Hermit Day today and much needed.

bundle up, tourists!

Ginger and I went to Crissy Field for our walk yesterday and while the rest of the world swelters, it was cool and foggy here. These cyclers are all from Germany and seemed to be having a wonderful time despite the weather, or maybe because of it. And yes, we did too.

off to India

I had coffee at Le Marais Bakery on 18th Street yesterday morning with Joe and he recommended this fabulous movie on Netflix. Gangubai Kathiawadi is superb and I give it many thumbs up.

Claire was canceled

Pat and I went to the Z Space yesterday afternoon to see Boys Go To Jupiter (because they are stupider), a one act play about a white college girl who makes a dumb mistake as she grieves the death of her mother and reacts poorly and causes problems for many. A play for our times. A small but appreciative audience as we get back into theatre world. Then we went over to Neti's for dinner and good food and chatter.

OH, they are b-a-c-k

Tourists galore in Chinatown yesterday ~ really, the sidewalks, stores and restaurants were all back in business. And I had a lovely catch-up time with Dancing Jen over lunch at our old favorite Golden Star. The chef dashed out for fresh mushrooms for my delicious chicken dish. Jen has been their superb and special customer for years and so I benefitted. A fine day indeed. Gratitude!

you should find Faith soon

Warning ~ the Egyptian Pharaohs are returning to the deYoung August 20th, and so plan now to see the amazing Faith Ringgold before then. I could study Tar Beach (middle photo) for weeks. The family on a hot summer night in NYC on their roof top. Ms. Ringgold is 90 now and her life and times are told in such a bold and creative manner in this glorious exhibit. Through November 27th.

The Magic Flute

Yesterday the Book Club (not pictured) met out on Sacramento Street at the Magic Flute to discuss the excellent Louisa May Alcott biography by Harriet Reisen. She was an impressive woman who lived in oppressive times. I have used that clever expression (mine) twice already this morning. Very cool am I.

the Tuesday adventure

Yesterday Ginger and I had our walk and coffee down in Stern Grove at the kids' campsite. The kiddies were away on their own adventure to Glen Park, I have no idea why. The old "move 'em around" theory maybe? The fog was beginning to burn off and we did some fine people and dog watching.

two blocks away

The loud and beautiful Wild Parrots of San Francisco were seen by a neighbor over the weekend. They are busy chomping juniper berries and reminding us all of the wonderful book and movie ~ 2003.

my busy Sunday

Good thing I had Hermit Saturday because yesterday was full. Trash pick-up on Valencia Street with Emma, coffee and bagel at the Chit Chat Cafe in Pacifica (photo) with the Blogmaid and then dinner over at Neti's. Annabelle was not pleased. But it was a fine day for this human.

The Bear is stressful

But wonderful. A small cafe in Chicago with a new owner who won awards as a quality chef and conflicts are rampant ~ mostly caused by family. Surprise. Anyway, I am loving The Bear on Hulu. Enjoy, Chef!

grilled cheese and pickles

Heidi and Gini came for lunch yesterday. I used the "good china" hoping they wouldn't notice the lack luster meal. It's all about people, not cuisine, right? Good conversation!

our big old mean city

Here is a note which you probably can't read. Sorry. The tiny Japanese restaurant down at Precita Park posted this thanking the residents who cleaned up and painted over all the graffiti on their outdoor patio over the 4th of July long weekend. Anonymous good citizens. Warmed my heart...

my influencer

Even though Linda and Tom had the audacity to move from SF to Albuquerque, she still means the world to me and I listen when she recommends TV and books. Better Things on Hulu features the single mom of three girls and there are five seasons so hooray! And I ordered My Italian Bulldozer as Alexander McCall Smith is a favorite author. So thanks to my friends in New Mexico.

we just look like tourists

Grey, drippy fog and then sunshine these days. A-ok with me. Yesterday Ginger and I walked around Fisherman's Wharf and I texted sister Jane who will be here in December. Probably sunny then. We had our coffee watching the swimmers at Aquatic Park. It was a lovely morning and sweatshirt sales are booming at the Wharf, I betcha. Oh, Husbando and I did the salmon fishing back in the day, I think we paid $50 each and probably thought it was too much.

new friend, old neighbor

Nicole has lived in Bernal as long as I have but we only connected in the past couple of years doing left wing political work. She invited me to lunch yesterday which means I didn't have to worry about dinner and we had a pleasant time covering friends and family and our neighborhood.
